What I Wish I Knew

If you had told me a year ago that I would be attending my dream school, achieving every milestone I strived for, and having the confidence I do today, I’m not sure I would’ve believed you. But then again, the Kylee today is not the Kylee from a year ago. Not only did I academically succeed, but I also persevered through many difficult tasks, including becoming an officer in the FFA and navigating the anxiety of college preparations. This is truly my best year, because of everything that has happened in the 17 years leading up to this moment.

It seems like just yesterday. I was a Junior at Shenandoah High School. An upperclassman, but not a senior, so I knew I still had a lot to prove. With that came much self-searching, and goal seeking. I will admit it was a little daunting at times, knowing that next year would be my final year. But it empowered me; it made me focused and driven. With the love and support of my family, who consistently reminded me of my talents, even when I was having difficulty seeing them, I am who I am today. And I like me.

If I could say something to the highschoolers at Shenandoah High School, both upper and lower classmen, I would say to believe in yourself. Not every day is a blessing, but every day is a blessing. Because even in the midst of adversity lies opportunity. You can’t truly appreciate the good days without having a few bad days here and there. You can’t truly excel unless you are challenged. I thank God for all of the opportunities he has given me, both trials and tributes. I am blessed that he has provided me the opportunity to go to my desired college and pursue my ideal degree, to work in a career that will be more than just work. I couldn’t have seen it a year ago, but I see it today.
